Frederic Edwin Church visited Greece in 1869, spending several weeks in Athens where he created numerous studies and oil sketches of the Parthenon ruins. These studies served as the foundation for this large canvas, commissioned by financier and philanthropist Morris K. Jesup in 1871. Church began working on the painting by February of that year and completed it by May. The work was first exhibited at Goupil's Gallery in New York in 1872, where it received high acclaim. It was later featured in several major exhibitions, including the Paris Exposition Universelle in 1878.
